My little girl and I LOVE to do this. Kitty sometimes likes to mess with people and see how much she can get away with. She was recently the flower girl at our friends' wedding, and she loved making the guests guess how old she was (we got answers ranging from 12 to 18 - she's actually in her twenties).
When Kitty is happy, she regresses and is a bright, cheerful little girl. People notice this quality, and I think attribute it to kids who haven't yet lost their innocence and become cynical. Needless to say, Kitty was VERY happy (and little) at Disneyland, and we had a blast convincing people that it was her 12th birthday.
Sometimes though, Kitty turns bright red when people make assumptions about her age and our relationship. When I took her to Build-A-Bear in her school jumper, our conversation with one of the employees revealed that they thought she was my middle-school-aged little sister. We got another "little sister" comment from the cashier at the grocery store recently.
The youngest she's ever been mistaken for was "9-12" years old. As a disclaimer, the man who guessed that was quite elderly, and Kitty had brought Mr. Sunshine (one of her big giraffe plushies) with her to the doctor's office that day. It probably confused him that she kept calling me "Daddy" too...
Kitty's biggest "tell" though is her lip ring. She got it in college because no one would take her seriously (they all thought she was 14 years old). But when that ring slips behind the shield of her pacifier, it's startling how young she looks.
