Of course they can pee with it in there as its placed in the vagina not the urethra. As for the string; they don't break, but I've had sex on a few occasions where the girl had left the tampon in. In that situtation one of you is supposed to hang on to the string so it doesn't get pushed too far up but one time no one did and it required a lot of feeling about up there on my part to finally find the bloody (excuse my english) thing and pull it out.
