Ideally (in regard to actual children and reading level), it is best to read a few ages/grades above the childs actual age/grade level. This allows them to still grasp aspects of the novel/story with things for the adult to explain or have the child use deductive reasoning and context clues on. Examples of this would be reading 5 year olds books like Junie B. Jones and The Magic Tree House. I think if I were in AB mode the similar would apply to me as well.
