You can check, but I think exchanging phone numbers is as good as exchanging physical addresses. I doubt converting one into the other is at all difficult, given all the "white pages" efforts out there.
Me, I think I'd check a city for veracity by asking some relatively easy recent history questions. For my area (Charlottesville, VA), for example: What's the most deadly hurricane in modern history? What are the two roads in our area that people want to build but can't? And what would you notice as you got off of I-64 onto US 15 and crossed route 250? And what's new about the road past Monticello? Or: What's special about the local K-mart? Hmm: What (adult) diapers does the Food Lion at the Lake carry? and which Lake am I talking about, anyway?
If you've lived here, you know the answers to these and similar questions. If not, I don't think the web will answer all of them at all quickly.
