The value of a pound (in US dollars) is more a function of international money trading than anything else and changes on a daily basis. Though before they went to the decimal system, their money broke down (as best as I can remember) like inches, feet and yards. Something like 12 pence in a shilling and 3 shilling in a pound. You needed a math degree just to run a cash register. Perhaps someone from the UK can be more enlightening (and accurate).
