So a profession finds linux to be the best operating system... so what? Lets see you run Linux with a GUI that allows the non-professional to get actual work done. Then lets see how reliable it becomes. Fact is most computer systems are realable if you use command language. Hire 8000 people and have them work for 3 years, make Linux work with a GUI and then give it away open source. Windows is a bargain.
Before Gates I used an Apple II. If you want to talk about rip-offs go back to those days. The only hardware you could use was Apple at 2 or 3 times the price. Apple works cost a fortune and did'nt do much. Apple could have been in Gates position, but they were much greedier.
If you used PC in those day you had to buy Word Perfect and Lotus 123 each costing more than Office 2000 Premium does today. Lotus and Word Perfect never heard of "upgrade" and never dreamed of sharing files with each other. When the new version came out you ponied up the full cost of the program. Word Perfect (Corel) and Lotus could still be the number one office tools but they were too greedy.
Most of the critics of Windows and Gates have valid points, but show me a virtuous company in this industry. Netscape(AOL-Time Warner) is that your example?
Without MicroSoft we would have to depend on those who "devote their professional life" to computers. Most of us want to devote our professional lives to our professions, not our computers. MS gets the job done.
