That message comes up (instead of the picture) when my web server detects that the picture wasn't reached as a result of clicking on a thumbnail on the members page -- e.g., because the user had tried to type the URL of the individual picture directly into the browser. It also comes up if someone tries to hotlink the images.
If the message comes up even though you have indeed simply clicked the thumbnails on the members page, it means that your browser is withholding the http_referer header: this header is what tells the web server where the link (or click) "came from", and some old or non-standard browsers are broken with respect to this functionality, causing the stated problem.
Also some third party software, such as Norton Internet Privacy (or whatever it is called), are known to cause your web browser to mulfunction in this and other ways, with consequences including those that you described.
