Don't discount the possibility that wetness "down there" could well be sweat! But even so, if someone has worked up the sort of sweat you get in a marathon, I would expect most of their outfit to be wet through, not just their crotch. However, I have a number of times witnessed both women (and I'm sure men have done this too, but it's usually less obvious) with wet shirt, and wet briefs, except where the panties are under them, which have effectively kept them from being quite as wet as the rest of the briefs, EXCEPT for the crotch where she has quite obviously peed copiously through the panties and briefs.
The incidents involving Lisa Martin would be legendary if any of this board paid attention to such things; in fact, the most recent incident in my memory was actually posted here by someone who watched the last (1996) Olympic women's marathon and commented that one of the Aussie women had appeared to have wet her pants before the race even started.
So it really does happen folks, it's so common that saying it's not uncommon is a ridiculous understatement. Personally, I love the thought that the sporting world can have made such a pleasant activity an integral part of endurance sports.
