As I started to say, I don't come here wondering about split-streams. I'm simply compelled to throw in my opinion. Which is, based upon experience, that this unfortunate and nearly impossible to accurately direct split-stream may be prevented with a wipe or two. 'Check your tip then let it rip' is sound advice for a man preparing to urinate with a semen coated penis tip.
I'm not a doctor either (can you tell? :) ), but I do have experience to draw upon. The viscosity theory seems unlikely to me. I'd say it's external obstruction, semen for example, which causes the stream to split as it passes. A triple stream may be possible, who knows? At any rate, I'm sure I've contributed more than necessary here, perhaps being completely incorrect. So, over and out.
