Interesting that you chose to mention aspirin, derived from plants well known as pain relievers in folk medicine. Scientists in the 18th and 19th centuries consistently ignored their pain-killing properties. There are probably cures for cancer, AIDS and god-knows-what out there right know waiting for someone to take notice, like the mould on the carelessly left culture dish that Alexander Fleming discovered on returning from a holiday in 1928.
