I think the benefit partly psychological, because it helps give the sensation (or maybe illusion!) of doing something 'useful' with the lower part of the body, even if only as a distraction from discomfort; and partly physical, because it causes sensations that help to focus on and control the muscles.
Other signs are general irritability and lack of concentration; pacing around; keeping hands in pockets; and shuddering! :-)
