Maintaining a busy web site can be an expensive matter. If a site is not supporting itself by selling something like videos or magazines, affiliate advertising programs (i.e. pay per click, etc) offer a way to repay at least a part of the cost of running the site.
When you consider the small amounts received with these pay per click schemes, you'll quickly realise that they are a way of reducing the financial burdern of running a web site - rather than of making a profit!
Not everyone is in the luxury position of having unlimited time and money to offer services purely for charity. I think it is a little harsh to criticise someone for attempting to recoup part of their cost.
