Old shoes kept especially for the job, when mine get too tatty to repair I relegate them to wetting expeditions and dump them when too smelly.
For the best unplanned really embarrassing wettings I wear good shoes. They can survive a few soakings without suffering as long as they are washed out and dried properly after. The High is worth the hassle.
Plastic 'Kipper' sandals. (A bit uncool on men but women's high heel ones were in last summer.) I keep mine in the trunk of the car.
Cheap sneakers, trainers or yahting shoes you can put them in the washing machine. And dump when they start to break up they last most of a season. Sea water is pretty good deodouriser and I go sea swimming in them too.
Expensive 'wet & dry' boots like some hill walkers use etc use. Not tried, too dear, but tempting.
Hope this gives some ideas
