An interesting aside:
Affluent Romans often brushed their teeth with urine. Supposedly, fat Portugese women produced the best for this purpose, and citizens who were wealthy enough had it imported from Portugal.
This practice was soon discontinued, however. While a healthy person's urine is sterile, it ceases to be when trapped in an unrefrigerated amphora for the two week journey from Portugal to Rome. (Also, I can't imagine it did wonders for one's breath.) =)
