I've experienced the same phenomenon. I believe that when most males reach a certain level of arousal, a valve swells and blocks the urethra to prevent the backflow of semen into the bladder. This takes the strain off the sphincter muscles, and you don't seem to have to pee as badly. Of course, once you've ejaculated, the valve opens and you realize that all that pee didn't just go away!
So for at least some of us, a little pocket play to produce an erection can help to hold on a little longer. That is, unless you become a bit too enthusiastic and cream your undies, and then you'd better have flood insurance...
