There was a "Cold War" going on and the enemy (USSR) had invaded Afghanistan. That's why the USA helped Ahghanistan with aid and comfort. As for the Iraq Iran war, the USA aided Iraq because it's Cold War enemy the USSR was aiding Iran. It gets confusing; particularly when a nation developes selective amnesia by failing to educate an entire generation in history.
