Nobody asked for advice here can be there with the asker and partner so we can't tell how effective or appropriate our advice will be.
My own preference is for the nurturing-caregiver role but it doesn't sound like this woman is ready to respond to that as she is wired for "punishment" followed by aftercare.There's no telling as to whether the continued refinements she has agreed to over the years represent frayed tolerance or increasing acceptance...but I hope the original poster responds here!
