I'm not surprised at all that he was more ok with a pull-up. Pull-up type diapers seem to rest in a kind of grey area for non-ABDLs; like, it isn't as ridiculous as an adult wearing a diaper, and it kind of looks like normal underwear too.
How about you start wearing pull-ups all the time? Let him see you in them fully, or peaking out under your clothes or under your panties. Just don't let him see you use them. Keep them dry around him until he can't remember you ever not wearing one. Tell him you're only wearing them for comfort.
Actually using a diaper or pull-up is the part that freaks "normal" people out. So, remember, "just for comfort".
As far as making your man into more of a "daddy"....Make him feel more important, strong and such. Snuggle up to him on the couch. Tell him after a hard day at work you really like to get a big hug from him because it makes you feel a lot better.
