He's not against mittens on a string, just sheepskin mittens on a string because I'd use them like boxing gloves on the other LB's and LG's at playtime!

I remember the pair I had as a real kid so distinctly, from the Lakeland store, brown with sheepskin lining. My mum sewed the string on them - brown ribbon to go with my brown Paddington style duffel coat. Not only did I spin around and try to hit other kids in the playground with them I also chewed a hole in the right thumb in hopes I could suck my thumb through the hole. I was about 6 or 7.

Yeah I love the idea of mittens on a string as well. Your expression "makes my tummy go all funny" is just a perfect way of describing the feeling I get about certain things - nappies, dummies, mittens on strings, feety pyjamas... I should probably actually have everything on a string I have a bad knack of losing sunglasses, umbrellas, gloves and the like even in adult life.
