Purging? No. There wasn't anyone to purge. 99% of those involved in the group scarcely participated. By shutting down temporarily, I did nothing to thwart their disinterest. They are just as free to not attend, not post, not participate now as when SIDNY was active. LOL.
With the old model, I had to often purge those people who acted inappropriately. And that sucks. I hate being labeled a bad guy when I've spent thousands of my own dollars and hours to organize a welcoming group. And with the old model, I had to plead with people to volunteer. That shouldn't happen either.
But with the new model, I'll seldom need to remove anyone from the group because all applicants will be screened heavily before allowed membership. And since the group will have a paid membership, members will have an incentive to participate. That mitigates my risk, and ensures that the folks involved in the group are people who share my same passions and my same drive.
Can they disagree with me? Absolutely. But not with respect to the core mission of the organization. Those who disagree with that don't have to renew their memberships, or won't be invited back. Its a choice thing. Anyone is welcome to apply if s/he wants to assist in the mission -- and is welcome to leave (or be asked to leave) if the mission no longer suits her/him.
So no, its not about purging at all, but rather about creating an environment for those who are willing to work towards our goals as hard as I do. Those uninterested in that concept need not apply. :)
