Very well said! Words to live by. I'll add a five of my own to your five points:
6. Ask for references before meeting -- particularly if you and the other person interact within a larger kink community.
7. Best scenario -- pick a place where your face is known, and where you know every detail including: location, the staff and routes (note the plural) back home or to a safe location.
But if you don't have a "place" of your own, then pick one that is busy, but not too crowded. You want to be among people, but not forgotten. Introduce yourself to the staff (a guard, hostess, waiter, etc.) and ask them to keep an eye out for you.
8. If you're reluctant to bring a friend along, then set up several "safe calls." Tell a friend *exactly* where you will be and with whom you'll be (as per Brian's #3). Set up a call for when you arrive, a call during the middle of your date, and a call when you're leaving. Have your friend phone the police if you've not called in. (which of course implies that you shouldn't forget to make those calls)
9. Do *NOT* deviate from your prearranged plans unless absolutely necessary. If your date wants to change locations, arrange for your own transportation there. Do not get into your date's vehicle. And notify your safe call that you're changing locations.
10. Remember that anything can be replaced but you.
