Not sorry to hear that you left him - Definitely sorry to know that the whole process was sad and difficult. As you go forward, keep in mind that even unions between so-called "normals" fail more often than they succeed. It is better to invest your emotional energy in a relationship with at least some small potential to provide fulfillment than one with only superficial happiness.
