Lauren, you have nothing to feel guilty about or be ashamed of and you are definately not stupid. You had the courage to tell him how you feel and got his reaction. And it sounds like you have strong feelings for him.
If you think you're at a crossroad in your relationship, please consider some things before making a final decision. Can both of you meet half way with each other's needs? Is he flexible enough to accept and be supportive of your inner needs? Are you willing to repress your thoughts so you can have a mainstream relationship for him?
Lauren, please be true to yourself and let us know how you're doing. There's a lot of people who care about you here.
