Hi Mommy Laura,
I got my start (long ago) as a teen, and I would sew make-shift diapers on my mom's sewing machine out of rags. Some of them were tube-knits and I would sew a little loop up from one end, then cut the fabric, making a kind-of long-leg panty. I would have several layers like that, and then several rectangular layers pinned on outside of them (four-pin method). Safety pins and diaper pins are so widely available and they can be the magic ingredient to turn just about any material into High-Performance Underpants for a BigBaby. (The exception being paper products, generally.) One disposable material that may be useful is non-woven fabric cleaning-cloths which are about 18"x24". I'm sure that if you look around you may be able to source them in a larger size. But then you might just go for cloth in the first place since it's so widely available. And if you really want to go pro, you could get an "overlock" sewing machine which can sew with three to five threads at once. That may be a fairly large investment, because, as they say, it's cheaper to buy milk than to keep a cow. However, I mention it for anyone who has wondered how they get those fancy hems on diapers and various clothes such as T-shirts. Fancier and harder than that are the seams and hems on the most ordinary of babypants. So for babypants, I am truly grateful. I know, cause I tried to make a few myself. They came out, mmm, sorta ok, but it was really hard, tricky and time-consuming!! Aside from that, cloth diapers are easy to make because the final step is the pinning so the fit is always just right. No, I would never knock disposable products, they do have their advantages. But when baby really wants to go for a "ride" (teehee), nothing beats the durability of cloth diapers. Imagine baby in the back seat of a Jeep out on a long, winding and bumpy road in the Outback or in the mountains (well-fed, of course). He or she would never make it in disposables without shredding!! But then again, toilet paper and kitchen wrap is better than nothing, in a pinch !! Good idea Mommy Laura !!
