Be cautious about beating yourself up. You made a small mistake. But her collapse was there from the outset, waiting to happen. The key word is "precipitate". If your small mistake, of a type which absolutely every relationship will have now and then, caused her total collapse and withdrawal, she was not ready to form a relationship of this type to begin with. Your thought of a "long term and fulfilling relationship" with her may be a fantasy, in the sense that she was too fragile from the outset for such a thing to be possible. If she collapsed on such a small insult as you gave, there was never any real potential. You have learned from your small moment of neediness, you could learn also by looking back for earler signs of shakiness on her part that might help you avoid wasting time in the future.
