Some of my favorite scents are in the category of the 'industrial-strength' deodorizers one may need to use to freshen up the air in a baby's nursery. These scents can be somewhat heavy, so there's no mistaking that someone hasn't outgrown their diapers yet !! First there are the deodorant blocks (round with a hole on them) that go in the lid of a diaper pail. The heavy lingering scent practically shouts D-I-A-P-E-R-S !! However, I haven't been able to find them in the stores for the last few years. Probably the result of some safety concern suit to keep the product away from small children. There's a way around that though. The basic ingredient (paradichlorobenzene) is available in other forms in another section of the same stores. Look for scented moth repellers that hang in closets. The lavender-scented ones seem to be indistinguishable from the original diaperpail deodorizers. Since lavender scent was a traditional favorite used for many things long ago, it seems likely it was the original choice.
For room deodorizers there are more sprays than ever before. But which ones are more babyish? There's a lot of strange ones like 'cinnamon', or flowery ones, and to me they just don't fit. However, if the scent is distinctly germicidal or medicinal, that's far more appropriate !! In a Diaper Zone, you need that Industrial-Strength approach !! Two very good ones for that are "Ozium" (regular) and "Medi-Aire". Aside from their scent, and what makes them heavy-duty is their main ingredient, 'triethylene glycol'. This helps neutralize odors rather than just cover them up. Ozium is available everywhere, and in some alternative scents too, but I haven't tried those. You may decide for yourself if they work for a nursery, but the original (blue label) has a sharp scent, is kind of spicy and is more traditional. Of all places, Ozium can be found in the car section of Target and Walmart. Medi-Aire is more like heavy perfume and a bit too sweet. If baby does a big No-No, this heavy cover-up will let you postpone that overdue diaper change until the middle of the afternoon !!
Medi-Aire can be found in surgical supply stores and on-line. It comes in small 1-oz pump-spray bottles plus larger re-fill bottles.
A relatively new product that I haven't tried yet is called "Oust". It has approx 50% more triethylene-glycol than Ozium, comes in big cans and is priced low. I haven't tried it yet because I'm not too interested in citrus or flowery scents. However, I just saw an ad on tv that said they're introducing a new "unscented" version. I looked in two stores, but it hasn't shown up yet. This looks like a good one that can be used in combination with the other two !!
While I don't know what's in it, I'd like to put in a plug for an old favorite, "Glade Neutralizer" !!
