It may be that your past sneaking to the potty has him a little suspicious and he will get over it though he now thinks he needs to take preventive measures.
On the other hand,he may feel it's a more babyish thing for you and he'll want you to get used to it...will be interesting to see if you do.Is waking in the crib getting less "weird"?
