Growing up in the UK, I loved seeing girls wearing skirts and being feminine. I especially love school uniform - proper smart pleated skirts and kilts, blouses (that button over to the left, as girls' should), knee socks, pleated gym skirts for pe, etc.
Over recent years (I'm only in my 20s), everything has been moving, to my mind, in the wrong direction:
- Lots of schools allow girls to wear trousers now
- Girls can wear shorts for pe at some schools
- Girls can wear cycling shorts under gym skirt instead of knickers
- Girls wear boys shirts and polo shirts, which button to the right
- Girls want to play football and basketball instead of netball, rounders, lacrosse and hockey
I get really concerned that everything that is feminine and girly about girls growing up today is being taken away in the name of equality. Girls and boys can be equal but different - because we are different. I don't think it's right that a girl should be allowed to wear exactly the same uniform as a boy, any more than, realistically, a boy could wear a traditional girl's uniform.
The other thing is they keep talking about giving girls "the option" - but if you look at history, schools generally go this route (through the years):
1. Boys wear trousers and shirt, girls wear pleated skirt and blouse.
2. Boys wear trousers and shirt, girls wear straight skirt OR tailored trousers and blouse.
3. Boys & Girls: Black smart trousers and shirt/blouse
4. Boys & Girls: Black trousers and polo shirt
Uggg!
What do other people think? Can anything be done to stop this?
