I wrote another posting a little while ago that spoke of “small moments”, and how the little things can have the most impact. About how wonderful it is to be able to know what she’s thinking, and what she needs without having to ask her or having her tell you. It’s about “signals” and the ability to pay enough attention to the little things to understand their meaning.
Case in point: Her face and what it tells you.
While she sleeps:
Her forehead lingers so peacefully in sleep. Then it wrinkles ever-so-slightly as she dreams. Her eyes twitch in the midst of eventful things happening in her mind. Her eye lids tighten up as she moves to get a better position to lay, almost like she’s searching for new comfort. She shifts in her place, finds new posture, and her forehead returns to a tranquil state. Her eye lids relax. Her eye brows lay flat again and she sinks back into slumber.
Her nose will wriggle at the first whiff of a new scent that may float by.
He lips go from being closed to being partly opened to being curled up leading to the corners of her mouth going dry. Every so often, her tongue will appear to delicately re-wet them.
This is, of course, if she’s not nestling a pacifier in her mouth while sleeping. She’ll hold it tightly in place, but eventually loosen her teeth on it and allow it to droop sideways to the corner of her mouth. Sooner or later, it falls from her lips all together and she searches for it in the air to no avail. She faintly startles to, searching for it, and doesn’t settle back down into deep sleep until you replace it in her mouth.
He cheeks will change color with her body temperature. They’ll go somewhat pale when she’s cold and fairly blushed when she’s warm.
And she gives you all that information just as she lies sleeping in your arms or in her crib or on the floor before you.
When she’s awake:
Her eyes will tell you so much just on their own. She’ll grow wide-eyed with excitement or startle. They’ll shrink when she feels uncertain, or scared, or sleepy. They’ll twinkle when she laughs, or giggles, or is just simply happy. They’ll grow teary when she’s sad or lonely, or hmmm … needs to be changed.
Whether she’s nibbling a pacifier or not, you can always tell when she’s smiling, and how her whole face seems to light up when you lift her into your arms.
She’ll lower her head and gaze up at you with sheepish eyes when she feels “little”, or wants you to help her feel that way.
So much information can be acquired just by watching her, and not a single word is spoken.
You protect her. You provide for her. You make her happy. You make her smile. And she feels loved.
