Did anyone else have childhood experiences with falling asleep on long car journeys?
My parents had a house in Southern Europe when I was a kid, which meant about a 16 hour journey by car to get to, including a ferry ride from the UK to main land Europe.
With such a long journey, which we often took through the night, naturally I would often fall asleep, so it was not unusual for me to have an accident during the journey.
There was nothing too special about this, especially when I was younger, except that my sister always wore nappies on the journey too, even if she wasn't wearing them at home (her bedwetting came and went, so she had spells in and out of nappies at home). My sister often had daytime accidents anyway, so for my parents I guess it was better to be safe than sorry.
What did start to make those journey's special was when I got to 11-12 years old. My bedwetting had slowed and I had stopped wearing nappies on a nightly basis and switched to a plastic sheet, as I was still wetting the bed but not all that often. But there were certain things for which they could not take precautions, such as trips to my grandparents (where I normally slept in a sleeping bag) and of course there's no plastic sheets on car seats!
We used to go quite often, at least Easter, Summer and most Christmas holidays each year, and I remember on many occaisions over the years waking up in the car and needing a change at the next stop.
It also meant I could be quite lazy if we were watching a movie or something like that on the ferry!
