She would change them about once or twice a week. Yes.. they had an aroma, but after "breaking in" the rubber sheet with 365 wettings a year, for several years, even with clean sheets, when you laid down in bed the rubber sheet had its own distinctive smell. As for the sheet, I don't think it was a mat. It was heavy, but not that heavy and it was soft (although well broken in anything would be soft). The effect of the ridges was to disburse the pee. This would result in even a light wetting spreading out over the sheet.
