I have studied that. The woman was somewhat forced to drink somewhere near 2 gallons of water, in a much shorter period of time than two hours (which is my minimum - actually, it is pretty optimum). I also believe she had complications that went far beyond electrolyte balance, although that is a major consideration.
I have finished 4 liters (once even a little more) a couple of times, without ill effects. However, that does not mean that a smaller person would have severe challenges with that much water. Most I have chatted with about this have indicated that three liters is about optimum, and for some, 2 is enough.
Now, if one were to drink something high in electrolytes, only the OTHER complications would prevent 4 liters. However, that could have implications on the pee - color, odor, etc. I have not tried that yet.
It must be a personal choice, and the individual should NEVER drink past their own capacity, which is what that woman did.
The two-hour period is pretty optimum... one can drink what they wish during that period and be approaching an urgency at the end, just as they are preparing for be.
