It is great that you called ahead and, yes, the hotel should have protected the mattress. You do not say if the matteress was protected or not. BUT, the cost of ruined mattresses from any cause (could be spilled coffee) are only passed on to the customers in higher room rates. You should still be sure that there is protection. Just as you would be sure you have a non-smoking (or smoking) room if you had requested one when you reserved. Please do not create higher room rates for other travelers. We need not make others suffer in any way for our activities.
