Well I have to preface my reply by stating that regrettably, my parents did not (that I can recall) put me in nappies for any bed-wetting problem after the age of around 2 and a half. I was not a bedwetter.
However… each and every of my younger siblings (large family) were and they were typically kept in night nappies until as late as 6 or 7 years of age.
My mother would pin them into two or three layered cloth nappies under plastic pants. They were pretty bulky and quite obvious under their pajama pants. The timing would vary but was almost always at least an hour before bed, sometimes two hours or more.
I don't EVER remember them asking for help in going to the toilet after they were put in their nappies and I’d caught at least two of my siblings deliberately wetting their nappies shortly after they were put on more than once. The youngest one was easy to spot as she’d quietly go to a corner and stand still with her legs slightly apart and then hitch up her nappies to get comfortable after doing the deed. Us older siblings would "tell on her" and try to get her into trouble but my mother didn't pay much attention to us.
On one occasion, I caught an older one - he would have been six. We were wrestling on the floor and my hand got wet and I realized his nappy had leaked around the legging. He’d only had it on for minutes so it had to have been deliberate. I remember my mother catching them once or twice also. For some reason she was fussing with their clothing before bed and discovered that they were wet. She was quite cross and shouted at them for being too lazy. I seem to recall that at least on one occasion, she didn’t change them and just sent them to bed in wet nappies (which is probably what they were aiming for anyway).
