Let me add, that at the beginning of James Joyce "Portrait of the artist as a young man", he talks about oilcloth sheets for bedwetting -- and I think he's writing about 1930, and is at least 30 years old.
Natural Latex (gutta-percha) was introduced around 1900. I remember this because a shortage of it was threatening the transatlantic cable industry....as it is what was used before polyethylene in coaxial cables.
