larry is bang on with his recommendation for a line6 pod effects unit. that and a small amp will be plenty for learning how to play. when you are to the point where you're going to start playing with a band, you can either purchase a larger amp, or simply mic your amp with a 'shure SM58' mic, hanging down in front of the amp, or on a mic stand, and run the sound through the sound board into the mains. as you get more proficient with your effects processor you'll be able to change the sound between songs, and even use it to tune your guitar (i think... but i'm not 100% on that).
and if you're ever looking for a drummer in canada (ok, i'm in ontario but PLEASE don't hold that against me)... look me up!! :) i play professionally and would love to hook up with a bunch of ab/dl players to see what kinda music we'd make!!
