how bout i move to canada and you teach me piano and i teach you guitar? lol
seriously..... it's hard for me to recommend any kind of guitar, i always say play a few and see what suits you best. right now i play a fender telecaster but it's a mexican one, the neck is a bit thinner than the american made fenders and i got tiny fingers so it fits me better. i personally am a Gibson fan particuraly the SG's.....you get the nice fat tone of the Les Paul but without all the weight, Les Pauls are heavy ass guitars! another option is that Epiphone is the 'bargain' Gibson...made by Gibson but in a foreign country, the quality ain't bad and the sound is pretty 'chunky'.
as for getting the sound you want....today's effects units can pretty much get you any sound you could ever desire. i myself prefer the straight distortion of a head/cabinet setup, but you won't need that for inside the house! lol i rarely use effects with the exception of some chorus and delay on my clean channel, my 'dirty' channel is straight amp distortion. and no solid state...tubes only!!!! Crate makes some decently priced starter amps, buy a cheap little amp and invest in something like a Line 6 pod effects unit...small, you can plug headphones into it and it'll give you pretty much any amp sound ever made from a Mesa Boogie dual rectifier to a Fender twin reverb and it's not real 'digital' sounding either, another drawback of digital effects..but the newer ones are really getting good at hiding that now, i know there are others that may even be better but i really like the Line 6 Pod. any more questions kimmie you know where to find me :)
