Holds his pickle -- says that with those details, someone determined can probably figure out who you are.
1) 41 (reporting 39 for 3rd birthday in a row)/M/VA
2) Top-notch technical programmer (i.e. embedded systems, not webbish stuff) and mathematician - am inventor on a cute trick with lasers and measuring distances which got patented. Am also in print about that invention.
3) Likes a decent effort at communication -- but doesn't mind a few typos. The spirit matters more, and sometimes misspelling can be used to good effect.
4) Can get very depressed, was abused by a former GF. Still not 100% over it, 9 years later. Being diapered helps fight it.
5) I'm involved through my GF in hunter/jumper equine sports (she rides quite seriously, I'm allergic to the point where I saw the doctor last week about what emergency supplies to carry when around them -- I got a little more of a physical reaction to being licked than I felt was safe -- not only did I have a hive where I was licked on the hand, I also had a rash on my arm.) I can ride a horse in a very casual sense, the last time I was riding we were working on getting me to post reliably at the trot. I just don't have the time or the finances to really work at it.
6)I have little trouble reading the french on abkingdom -- I took it in high school while I was in Norway. I also still have some of my Russian from college, but that was technical Russian.
7) I am probably one of the longer-running posters here. (jereab is another, so is Kalory. At a guess, Kimmie and Victoriah Nicole Little have been posting for somewhat shorter times, though still long compared to most on this board. If I've forgotten or slighted you, feel free to post your corrections)
8) I'm really not here for romance -- I get that in my offline life. It's more for the support. If I were single, I'd definitely be involved in the local BDSM community if I ran into someone else involved. I like the community-builder's general attitude.
9) I'm an enlightened liberal. This is not the place to start a political debate -- but what I mean is that social programs do have their consequences, not all of which are desireable, and very careful design is necessary not to create disincentives for people to become more self-reliant. I think this war on Iraq (that wasn't even involved in bombing the WTC) is nuts -- it's really welfare for a few dozen of GW Bush's closest sycophants, with the result that everyone else now has a very strong reason to hate Americans. How the Hell am I going to go see the world without getting shot? Reviewing who got what powers after 9/11 makes it look an awful lot like some people in the US (particularly in the FBI, but also the President himself) had a hand in making it happen. I think we need BETTER gun control in the US -- the way I see it, the problem isn't NRA types with a lot of weapons, the problem is my next door neighbor who stashes his gun in his underwear drawer, forgets its there, and his kids or a common house theif steal it. The neighbor's lack of seriousness about the gun leads directly to that gun either falling into the hands of criminals or children who proceed to shoot someone, and the root cause is the lack of a secure place to store the gun.
10) I am an outdoors person. I own a canoe and use it on rivers, but I don't fish. I like to hike -- while the nearby mountains of VA are not as spectacular as the rock and snow topped beauties of Western America, they are still quite beautiful. (Except that in 30 years, we may not have any more trees on them, due to the stress from the sulfates and nitrates from the Ohio coal burners.)
11) Global Warming could kill us all -- the real problem is that we are pushing hard on the CO2 budget, but we just don't know the consequences. The internet will actually help the situation as it allows more of us to commute more efficiently by telephone.
