Others may feel that historical inaccuracies, real or perceived, make for political controversy and distract from the story. I think, though, that for the purposes of telling a story, any vivid setting will do, whether it is real or fictional. Furthermore, real people have political views; why shouldn't characters?
While I agree with some of the comments and disagree with others, the main point, at least for me, was that the offending paragraph, far better than the standard "insert body measurements and feature descriptions here" template, provided the story a colorful setting.
