5 Questions With Jann Arden
Jann Arden is a Canadian music icon whose melodic songs are familiar to anyone who's turned on a radio (everybody's heard "Insensitive" at least once haven't they?). She also pops up on Canadian TV shows and awards ceremonies and is always a witty good sport. She put her sense of humour to use as she filled out our "5 Questions With…" feature in the wake of the release of her new, self-titled record:
Q.Why should people check out your music, what sets it apart from other material that's out there already?
A. My music is musical. Hard thing to find these days...it makes vacuuming go by quicker and can also clear a group of "partiers" out of your house if need be in mere seconds. My words and my lyrics are understandable and by gosh, you'll impress your friends by playing them somebody great that they've never heard of before!!
Q. What five songs or albums would you use as a soundtrack to your life so far and why?
A. That's easy, everything by ABBA, all 567 of their albums speak volumes about my life. My love of dance is no secret, and my love of all things Swedish; meatballs and er...ah...ya, meatballs. I dated a guy named Fernando once and I kissed my shop teacher one time too, so that's it in a nut shell. What the hell is Waterloo and why does it make me want to pee?
Q. What's been your most embarrassing and your most exhilarating moment in the music world so far?
A. Well, embarrassing moment is a no brainer...I once had an intestinal problem...don't know how else to put it, in Cologne, Germany. I actually had an accident in my pants (that were stapled together no less), on stage during my first song. The rest of the night was a blur. I had some kind of horrible bug that took me 3 months of antibiotics to get rid of. My most wonderful moment was singing "We've Only Just Begun" with Richard Carpenter at a publishing party in the mid-nineties. She, Karen, was my all-time favourite singer and still is. It so doesn't seem real to me even now. He was such a good guy. I have the signed sheet music I used that night framed and hanging in my den.
Q. Finish these two sentences:
Q. If I wasn't pursuing a music career right now I would probably be....
A. a treasure hunter/zookeeper
Q. Making it in the music industry is tough, but I never gave up because...
A. it was better than working for a living.
Q. Describe both yourself and your music in five words.
A. Funny/sad/peaceful/sentimental/healing
