Alternative #1: This is the most expensive, $500 to $2500. I personally use the Canon GL2 which is an industrial, 3-chip camera. This is an overkill for web purposes, but makes great DVD's for my own archiving purposes. The downsizing of the video for web is exceptional.

Any MiniDV camera will afford excellent results and a $40 firewire card gets your video into your computer. Many cameras come with some rudimentary video editing programming enough to get you video Internet friendly. Adobe's Premiere Pro is great, but only works under Windows XP and is very costly if you don't need all it offers.

The other advantage of a DV camcorder is that most will pass any analog video like VHS through its analog-to-digital converter. Not only can you transfer your old VHS to MiniDV, but you can get it into your computer directly without buying another capture card.

Alternative #2: Use a digital still camera, $250 to $500. Most have the ability to record a minute of QuickTime or MPEG-1 video. It is generally 320x240 and ready for uploading to the web as is.

Alternative #3: Get a USB device like Dazzle for under $100. This allows you to capture any analog video source including VHS through your USB port. However, these devices depend on powerful computers, but then again most video does anyway.

Good luck,
Bill2
