Think L.E was trying to be helpful, ie help maximize your chances of sucessfully finding the right person in your area.
Like you've admitted you weren't particularly clear, if it had been obvious that travel was not a problem then i doubt he would have commented at all.
There's no reason you or anyone else should be specific about their location, I usually state my location as being an hour outside london, which hardly pinpoints where i am. If that doesn't work for you perhaps you should try :thanks for the advice, much appreciated, but i'd prefer not to state my location until i have built up friendship or whatever.etc etc.
Anyway good luck with your search, I hope you find someone nice that makes you happy.
