I wore disposable briefs like big nappies and sometimes pants with pads and elasticated rubber pants. The best protection from a wet bed was and still is good old fasioned terry nappies and plastic pants. My bed had a plastic sheet on and then I got a better fitted one that didn't make as much noise and stayed in place. That combined with a pad and me wearing ordinary underwear was the most comfortable. The sheet got wet but so what.
