Im with you.
After one major pee accident (well, I was mostly lazy, and cold) that nearly destroyed an expensive mattress, hubby sought protection (he was so very upset with me). We slept on a painter's tarp for a couple of months, and he finally found a waterproof mattress cover (like the hotels use). They last at least a year, often lots more, so they are a pretty good buy.
Once I discovered it was something I wanted to continue doing, hubby helped me buy some mattress pads (hospital type, on the net), and I added some terry towels (they can absorb a lot). I have tanked up before bed a number of times (as much as 4 liters of water in two hours), and I pee so much that it will sometimes saturate the towels, and overflow the pad, but even that has little impact on the mattress cover.
It seems a good combination - just a little more laundry.
