The reason that they were lifting the tube into the air is because the surface tension urine can make what is called an "air lock" which basically means that the urine cannot pass into the bag. By manipulating the tube, you can break the surface tension and urine can flow from the cathether, down the tube and into the bag. This can be a real pain in the butt some days and sometimes the catheter bags seem more of a hassle than a help.
